Depending on the Manufacturer of your vehicle, dashboard warning lights differ from vehicle to vehicle. We have here a list of the most rare and most common of lights and give a description of what each one means and the action you should take. Remember that the easiest way to view your vehicles dashboard warning lights is in your owners manual. One of the most common mistakes that people contact us about is when there is an instrument on their dashboard for a feature their car does not have, For example your dashboard may show an "ABS" section but your vehicle may not have "ABS". This is because manufacturers use a standard dashboard for certain models, such as all the Ford Focus dashboards will be the same. So from the top spec to the bare bones spec of car, your dashboard will probably have the same dials but obviously not connected to anything. Engine Warning Light
| | This is probably the most serious warning light. Although it looks like an engine warning light, it sometimes isn't. Sometimes it can mean problems with the alternator which means you are going to have to stop before the vehicle loses power. On modern vehicles it may be that your vehicle has now dropped into safe mode. This means that you will have limited drive and acceleration until the vehicle has been inspected and the fault warning system reset. So if your car does slow with this light on, our advice would be to pull over when safe to do so and call the breakdown services. Some vehicles have orange warning symbols, although if it does illuminate in orange you must take it just as serious as the red symbol to the left. |
Oil Pressure Warning Light
| | It is perfectly normal for this light to be on at the point of ignition. This has 2 reasons for being on at this point a) To show it is able to illuminate and the buld is working b) The engine has no oil pressure as the engine is off. It is important not to drive if this light is on, it means that for whatever reason the engine is not being lubricated correctly and eventually the moving metal parts will over heat against each other and seize. Some people say that when the oil light comes on it is already too late and that it has caused damage to your engine. This is simply wrong, manufacturers have long since built safeguards into this warning system and as long as you take action when the light becomes apparent it will do no damage. To remedy the problem stop the vehicle and check the oil level, if low, add accordingly. If the oil is at the correct level it could be anything from an "O Ring" in the engine leaking, to the oil pump failing. Either way you will need to seek professional help. | More Coming Soon
